China’s Knitting Credentials: A New National Standard, Industrial Skills and Formal Study
A 2026 national standard that includes hand knitting
It is easy to assume that China has no public skills framework for knitting because “knitting teacher” does not appear as a familiar national licence. That picture changed in 2026. On 28 February, China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security issued a new national occupational standard for 绒线编织拼布工—a yarn-knitting and patchwork occupation—under code 6-05-01-06. The role covers knitting wool or cotton yarn with knitting needles or crochet hooks, as well as assembling fabric pieces by hand or with sewing equipment. In other words, the published standard explicitly brings hand knitting and crochet into a national occupational framework, while also combining them with patchwork work.
The standard sets out five skill grades: Level 5 (entry), Level 4 (intermediate), Level 3 (advanced), Level 2 (technician) and Level 1 (senior technician). The title should not be mistaken for a craft-teacher licence. Its scope includes two kinds of production work—yarn craft and patchwork—and its grades concern occupational skills. The standard does not, by itself, grant permission to teach, accredit a private studio or guarantee a job.
Training hours and eligibility vary by level. A publicly available reproduction of the 2026 standard gives reference training volumes of 120 standard hours for Level 5, 110 for Level 4, 100 for Level 3, and 96 each for Levels 2 and 1. Those figures describe the standard’s reference framework, not a promise that a course is currently open in every province. Local assessment bodies publish actual intake dates, class schedules, fees and examination arrangements. Before relying on a third-party summary, check the current notice with the local human-resources and social-security authority and the registered assessment body.
The industrial flat-knitting occupation
Hand knitting and machine knitting both produce knitted fabric, but they call for different training and different assessments. In 2024, the Ministry issued a separate national occupational standard for 横机工, the flat-knitting machine operator. It defines the occupation as operating a flat-knitting machine to turn yarn or filament into garment panels and components, and sets out five skill grades. This is an industrial production standard—not a qualification for teaching recreational hand knitting.
Read together, the two standards show a more accurate map of expertise. The 2026 yarn-knitting and patchwork standard includes hand knitting and crochet alongside patchwork; the 2024 横机工 standard covers industrial flat-machine work. China’s occupational classifications also distinguish other knitting processes, such as weft knitting and warp knitting. A hand-knitted sweater, a programmed flat-knit panel and a patchwork textile may all be made with yarn or fabric, but they do not demonstrate the same competencies.

What “national qualification” means in China
Three terms are often collapsed into one: the National Occupational Qualification Catalogue, a national occupational standard, and a vocational skill-grade certificate. They are not interchangeable. In the 2021 reform, many skill-evaluation qualifications left the government-run catalogue and shifted to a socialised skills-grading model. That did not mean the occupations disappeared or that skills stopped being assessed. The state may publish an occupational standard while assessment is carried out by an evaluation organisation registered with, or publicly disclosed by, the relevant human-resources and social-security authority.
This distinction matters for knitting. The 2021 qualification catalogue does not provide a simple “hand-knitting teacher” licence. But that absence does not cancel a later occupational standard or the skill-grade route. When you see a course advertised as a “national certificate,” ask which exact occupation and code it uses, which grade is assessed, who issues the document, and whether the evaluator is listed in the official registry. The OSTA skills-evaluation network provides routes to check national vocational qualification certificates, vocational skill-grade certificates and publicly registered evaluation bodies. A marketing phrase such as “nationally recognised” is not a substitute for checking the certificate record.
Vocational and university routes
Occupational standards describe what a worker should be able to do; schools teach the theory, practice and design knowledge behind that work. The two routes can complement one another, but they award different kinds of recognition. China’s Ministry of Education included a higher-vocational major called 针织技术与针织服装 (“Knitting Technology and Knitwear”) in its 2021 vocational-education catalogue. Guangdong Polytechnic’s programme overview lists subjects such as warp- and weft-knitting processes, knit-product and sweater design, computerized jacquard design, dyeing and finishing, product inspection, and production management. This is vocational education aimed at the textile and apparel sector; completing the programme should not be assumed to confer a separate national skills-grade certificate.
A university route offers a broader engineering education. Tianjin Polytechnic University’s 2024 Textile Engineering plan for its knitting excellence class includes knitting science, knit-product design, integrated design experiments, shaped-knit product design, smart knitting production and industry placements within a four-year engineering bachelor’s degree. Students connect materials and fabric structures with production and product development. That is an academic degree pathway in industrial knitting—not a hand-knitting instructor credential.

Questions to ask before enrolling
- If your goal is better hand knitting: ask whether the course teaches knitting, crochet or both; what project you will complete; how gauge, pattern reading, shaping and finishing are assessed; and whether the document is a course-completion certificate or an official skill-grade certificate.
- If you want a formal skill grade: use the exact title and code 绒线编织拼布工 (6-05-01-06), then confirm the level, entry requirements, evaluator registration and current local exam notice. Because the occupation combines knitting and patchwork, ask which skill module the assessment covers.
- If you want a knitwear career: compare the 横机工 standard, vocational programmes in knitting technology, and textile-engineering degrees. Look for the work you actually want—machine operation, product design, production management or engineering research—and compare the curriculum and equipment against it.
- If you may work abroad: do not assume that a Chinese certificate automatically transfers. Ask the employer or licensing body in the destination country how it evaluates the document, occupational code and evidence of practical competence.
China’s knitting education is not one ladder with a single certificate at the top. The 2026 national standard brings hand knitting and crochet into an occupational skills framework; a separate standard addresses industrial flat-knitting work; vocational colleges teach production and design; and universities offer engineering degrees. The most useful question is not whether a course sounds “official,” but exactly what skill it assesses, who evaluates it and what the resulting document actually proves.
Editorial note: The Ministry’s official skills-policy index and a notice reproduced by Guangdong’s 12333 public-service platform confirm the 2026 promulgation of 23 occupational standards. Detailed training and entry information was checked against a publicly reproduced copy of the 2026 standard and should be reconfirmed with the current local authority before enrolment. Evaluation centres and examination dates are administered locally.
